Best Code Editors For Doing Coding | frontend everything
Hey friends and welcome back to the Frontend Everything blog. Today I'm gonna share with you some of the top 4 code editors for web developers. Without further ado, let's dive in.
First and foremost, we need to obtain some clarity on what is a code editor. A code editor is generally a text-based program that can be used to write or view and even edit code. The first full-screen editor was O26 which was founded in 1967.
As time passed by, the ability to write code came to the notepad app. However code editor apps these days have more functions like syntax highlighting, extensions, live server preview, and more.
Now let's see the top 4 code editors.
1. Visual Studio Code
Microsoft Visual Studio Code is top on the list. Visual Studio Code is one of the most stable, smooth, and probably the best code editors available out there.
It has plenty of features including, a very wide variety of extensions to boost your productivity workflow, many themes available, a built-in emmet feature to speed up your coding process, and many more.
The live server extension allows you to host a local live server using localhost on your desktop to run a live preview of your webpage output.
To download it, go to https://code.visualstudio.com/download and download the compatible file type depending on your desktop OS and hardware specs.
2. Atom
Atom is also a very good code editor. Atom was developed and founded by the famous company, Github. Atom doesn't have a built-in emmet but it can be downloaded via the extensions. Atom has cool themes too with syntax highlighting.
They also have a live preview extension that can be opened with the CTRL+ SHIFT + H shortcut after installing it. However, the main reason Atom goes to the second spot is that it's mainly aimed for frontend web development with lesser extensions compared to Microsoft Visual Studio.
Besides that, it's said to be that Atom takes a much longer time to load the app when started.
3. Sublime
Sublime Text Editor was founded by Jon Skinner and was pretty much famous last time. It was one of the most famous code editors before Microsoft VisualStudio Code existed.
However, it used to have a very basic interface and lesser extensions which made it go down in the ranking at one point in time. However, these days, they are releasing new updates and their latest update has a cool user interface.
Sublime CodeEditor is pretty good but it has minor cons too such as difficulty to navigate throughout the app, syntax awareness is sometimes reported to be laggy or buggy in certain complex situations too.
4. Replit.com
The following code editors above are all offline code editors that need you to download the application and consume more storage space and RAM. This can be a problem if you're using an old laptop.
Thus, you can try using an online code editor for this case. In my opinion, one of the smoothest, and the best online code editor is replit.com as it worked smoothly for me even on my old desktop last time which only had Intel Pentium.
Thus, I hope these suggestions help you decide which code editor to use depending on your use case. Thanks for reading and goodbye!
